We own a copy of Whale Shines so I might need to pull that one out for when we go back to school... NEXT WEEK. Our transition to Kindergarten was rough. It took months to really smooth out the rough patches. I don't share this to scare you, because who knows what your child's experience will be. I just want to give you some encouragement to be patient and go easy on them and cut yourself some slack while you work through it all. I haven't totally convinced myself that this year will be any better but I think I'm better prepared with skills to build confidence in my child.
I so appreciate the honesty. I except some rough months and that I will need to be constantly reminding myself to be gentle. I hope this year goes a bit smoother for you.
I'm glad you muster the courage to write this newsletter, Alexis. You don't give yourself enough credit.
Your kiddo is going to do amazing starting kindergarten, and so are you! Expect that he will be very, very tired that first month -- extra cuddles, lots of grace, and early bedtimes are your friend -- but pretty soon, it will all feel normal. Be gentle with yourself and hang in there 🩷
I think I need to read Perfect Pigeons for myself. I love that you highlight this type of bravery too because it’s the one we’ll probably encounter the most over our lifetime!
As you well know, the school experience and especially Kindergarten is fraught with highs and lows and there are so many factors that play into it. Each year, each teacher, each child is different and their experiences different! I can’t wait to hear all about the first day and how it goes. I always had the expectation of success with each of my children and in the big long process I feel confident that it was! All 3 graduated from both High School AND College so that feels pretty successful to me! I’m not saying it was always easy but have faith and confidence that they can do it and I am certain they will love it!
Jabari Jumps is one of my favorites about facing your fears and trying new things and is a summertime favorite at our house.
I keep meaning to check this one out! I love knowing you endorse it!!
Jabari Jumps is pure gold.
Love Jabari Jumps!
Ooh! Just picked this one up from the library over the weekend!

Thank you! It is totally on repeat, the lesson and the bravery it takes to be true to you! I hope we both keep practicing being our own best pigeon!
